Bania is something of a generic term, and there are many Bania communities. The Bania trace their history back about 5,000 years. Fifty communities have a traditional caste council, election to which is by a voice vote among 44 communities and by secret ballot among six. Widow remarriage is allowed among half of Bania communities and divorce has gained social approval among 33 communities.
