Central-Eastern Fulani in Niger

The Sokoto Fulani, who are a subgroup of the greater Fulani tribe, are on the border of Niger and Nigeria. The Sokoto comprise the ruling class (Toroobe) as well as semi-nomadic shepherds (Bororo). The ruling class live in towns and cities, are educated, and fill leadership positions at the municipal and state level.

Ministry Obstacles

The Fulani believe that to be a Fulani is to be a Muslim. Many Fulani are revered teachers of Islam, who get much respect for their Islamic pedigree. Some are participating in jihads (holy wars) in an effort to eradicate Christian people from their midst, which adds a layer of enmity with believers.

Outreach Ideas

Polluted water is a problem for the Sokoto Fulani, who suffer from malaria and other water-carried diseases. Missionaries and engineers might be welcomed in their efforts to make water potable in overpopulated cities. Because many Sokoto Fulani are among the ruling class, they would be in a position to influence their constituency to consider the claims of Christ.

(ESV) Pray that the Sokoto Fulani would become "useful" to the one true Holy God. Pray that this would be the decade when the Sokoto Fulani have an unstoppable movement to Christ.
