Hela

The Hela in Uttar Pradesh are identifiable by their distinctive attire and ornaments, as well as by the tattoo marks they wear. They are landless and continue to engage in traditional occupations of scavenging, mat-weaving, and basket-making, although some have also taken on other employment. They are Hindu, and they have their own priests to perform rituals, as well as ojha (those who control spirits) to help them appease evil spirits.

Ministry Obstacles

The Hela speak several languages, as most people groups do in India. Each of these language subgroups may need its own church planting effort. The Hela live deeply rooted in Hindu traditions, including worship of family deities and clan deities. Their cultural and religious identity is closely tied to Hindu practices, making openness to the gospel a spiritual and social challenge. Such a situation causes most people to balk at accepting Christ's lordship.

Ask God to send compassionate, Spirit-led workers who will build relationships and live out the gospel among them. Pray that entire families would come to faith and be empowered to reach others, sparking a movement of disciples who make more disciples. Ask for grace and truth to transform the Hela society as believers grow in love, service, and unity.
