Arabic-speaking Algerian

Algeria's form of Arabic incorporates many words from the earlier Berber language. The Berbers, or Imazighen, meaning "free people," were the dominant population of North Africa before the Arab invasions of the seventh century. In modern Algeria, Arab youths are increasingly drawn to Western music, films, and fashion, often to the concern of Islamic leaders. The younger generation frequently favors Western-style clothing over traditional Arab dress. In keeping with custom and religious practice, marriages are still commonly arranged by families, especially in rural communities. Most Islamic marriages are performed solely under the authority of a sheikh rather than being formally registered with the state, leaving little opportunity for unions based purely on romantic choice.

Ministry Obstacles

Today, virtually all tribes are Sunni Muslim, with Islam having been adapted to their local traditions and culture. As Muslims, the Arabic-speaking Algerians believe that they must please Allah by obeying the right laws. They reject the idea of looking to a sin-free savior. Some are fearful to give their life to Jesus Christ due to the harsh punishments that are endorsed in their Islamic community.

Scripture Focus

"And Moses quickly bowed his head toward the earth and worshiped. And he said, If now I have found favor in your sight, O Lord, please let the Lord go in the midst of us, for it is a stiff-necked people, and pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us for your inheritance."  Exodus 34:8-9

Scripture Prayer

Pray that members of this people group will soon have as rich an understanding of the need for God’s presence as Moses did.

Prayer Focus

Pray that God would use the uncertainties of life to open Algerian Arabs to the gospel of eternal life in Christ. Pray that the JESUS Film and audio materials would be used effectively among them. Pray that Algerian Arab believers would grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus and the Bible. Pray that those who want to know Christ will be given the courage and boldness to follow in the faith despite the backlash from their community.
