Orang Negeri Minangkabau in Malaysia
oh-RAHNG NEH-geh-ree mee-nahng-kah-BOW

As descendants from the Minangkabau people from West Sumatra, Indonesia, the Minangkabau of Malaysia have a distinct culture and their own royal line that dates back several centuries. The Minangkabau highly honor their women, as they pass their names and property through the mother. The Minangkabau are devout Muslims in spite of their matrilineal heritage. The practice of female inheritance and prohibition of polygamy draws criticism from more orthodox Islamic people groups.

Ministry Obstacles
Malaysia does not provide easy access for Christian workers, and the Minangkabau are devout Muslims.

Outreach Ideas
The people feel that their culture is in danger of dilution by outside influence. Efforts to share the gospel with them will need to be very sensitive to the preservation of this culture.

Scripture Focus
"But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream."  Amos 5:24

Scripture Prayer
Pray that God’s justice and righteousness prevail in the society of this people group.

Prayer Focus
Although there are likely no followers of Jesus Christ among the Minangkabau at this time, pray for the preparation of their hearts to receive those who will need to come with attitudes of patience and sensitivity. May the unique culture of the Minangkabau be preserved and blessed as a culture designed by a compassionate God. Pray for preservation of the culture while accommodating the truth personified by Jesus. Pray that Jesus would stir the hearts and minds of all Minangkabau people in Malaysia.
