Laz in Germany
laz

The Laz (or Mingrelian) are in danger of being absorbed into the much larger Turkish people. The Laz homeland is northeastern Turkey and Georgia. A small group of Laz have migrated to Germany. Young Laz people are learning German and Turkish but often not the language of their grandparents. It is doubtful that the Germans see the Laz as different from the Turks. The Laz people speak German at work and school and Turkish with their neighbors. The Laz, like other Turkish peoples in Germany, often take jobs considered undesirable by the Germans.

Ministry Obstacles
The Laz have been Sunni Muslims since the time of the Ottoman Empire. Islam is an integral part of their identity.

Outreach Ideas
German churches and individuals can build redemptive relationships with the Laz. Respecting the Laz culture and language would provide an opening to share the gospel.

Scripture Focus
"I stretch out my hands to you; my soul thirsts for you like a parched land. Selah"  Psalm 143:6

Scripture Prayer
Pray that many from today’s people group will thirst for the Lord’s presence.

Prayer Focus
A tiny fraction of the Laz in Germany follow Christ. Pray these few believers would resist the pressure to return to Islam and grow in the Christian faith. Pray the Lord would raise up disciples among the Laz of Germany in this decade. Pray the Lord would create a hunger for truth and the word of God among the leaders of the Laz community.
