Gayo in Indonesia
GAH-yoh

The Gayo of Indonesia live in the remote central highlands of Aceh Province on the island of Sumatra, an area difficult for Christians to enter. The Gayo do not have a written language. Folk tales and oral stories are passed down in the form of poetry. They are mostly Muslim, but their understanding and conviction are lacking. Most still believe in good and bad spirits and the power of holy men, both dead and alive.

Ministry Obstacles
The Gayo live among the strongly Muslim Aceh, making access especially difficult to outsiders. Sustained, focused prayer is needed.

Scripture Focus
"To whom then will you liken God, or what likeness compare with him? An idol! A craftsman casts it, and a goldsmith overlays it with gold and casts for it silver chains."  Isaiah 40:18-19

Scripture Prayer
Pray that this people group will soon understand that they can never form an idol that compares with the Lord.

Prayer Focus
Pray that the few Christians among the Gayo will feel God strengthening them in their commitment and service to him. Because local understanding about health matters is very low, ask God to send Christian medical workers to help improve health conditions and encourage the people to take better care of themselves. Ask God to give the Gayo a curiosity about Christ and a desire for true holiness.
