Tamasheq Tuareg in Mauritania
TAM-uh-shek TWA-reg

Tuaregs are known for their distinct culture, dress and fine craftsmanship. Though they are Arabized Berbers, their ancestors were once Christian. Their ancestors fiercely rejected Islam until they were won over by Sufi Islamic mysticism. Today, they espouse a mixture of Sunni Islam and folk religion and do not fully practice the "pillars" of Islam, including the month of fasting. Only the men wear veils, and women may have some leadership roles. Their indigo clothing colors their skin, so they are known as "blue people." They speak a distinct dialect of Arabic.

Ministry Obstacles
There is very little gospel witness in Mauritania. Almost everyone follows Sunni Islam there.

Outreach Ideas
On the other hand, concentration in refugee camps ends nomadism, opens opportunity to show the JESUS Film and gospel recordings and meets needs. Their form of Sufi Islam allows for the supernatural, so it's possible that believers can introduce them to the miracles of Jesus.

Scripture Focus
"Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom he has redeemed from trouble"  Psalm 107:2

Scripture Prayer
Pray for this people group to call out to the Lord to redeem them from sin, their main enemy.

Prayer Focus
Pray that the few Tuareg believers would be winsome witnesses, take advantage of refugee status to study Scripture and use their time to bring about a large and healthy church planting movement. Pray that all Tuaregs would be able to safely exit the refugee camps and that they would be safe from health challenges. Pray for a Disciple Making Movement to flourish among them in Mauritania.
