Kikim in Indonesia
The Kikims are Muslim, but remnants of their old animistic beliefs are still seen in their lives. The Kikim are known for a traditional ceremony called Sedekah Rame, where the entire village gathers to eat a ceremonial meal together while seated in a designated area in the rice fields. That place is set aside as a place for burning incense, presenting ritual offerings to spirits, and lighting bonfires. Their pattern of frequent relocation makes it challenging for these farmers to pursue formal education. Those who have access to education must deal with an under-funded educational system with inadequate infrastructure. There are not enough teachers. Many children do not go to school or have dropped out. Many Kikim children also suffer from malnutrition.
Ministry Obstacles Sumatra, the home of the Kikims, is said to be the largest unevangelized island on earth. Most of its people groups are staunchly Muslim. That means the Kikims meet few, if any, Christians in their lifetimes.
