Yunnan Shui in China
Yoo-nahn Shway
The Yunnan Shui celebrate the Copper Drum Dance during special occasions such as the Duan Festival. The festival celebrates the gathering of the harvest. The Shui in Yunnan migrated to their present location at least 250 years ago. Today, they live several hundred kilometers west of the main body of Shui in central Guizhou. During their separation, the Yunnan Shui have developed their own customs, and their language is now distinct from Guizhou Shui. Most also read and write Chinese, and all but the elderly can speak the Southwestern dialect of Mandarin.
Ministry Obstacles Most Shui in Yunnan are animists. There are very few Christians among them. Living in China's least-reached province, they have little or no exposure to the gospel. The Yunnan Shui do not see living Christianity in practice unless they meet one of the rare believers.
Scripture Focus "The Mighty One, God the LORD, speaks and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting." Psalm 50:1
