Judeo-Persian Jewish in Iran
joo-DAY-oh PUR-zhun joo

Judaism in Iran dates to the time of Esther (5th century BC). The feast of Purim began there in response to a planned pogrom. Today, most Jews in Iran live in Tehran, Isfahan and Sharaz. In those cities they have synagogues, cultural centers, kosher markets and restaurants. They do not openly express support for Israel, and they avoid contact with Christians or any Messianic Jews. Their goal is peaceful survival as a people.

Ministry Obstacles
Their self-preservation as a people closes them to gospel advocates, as does Iran's persecution of Christians. Iran is a creative access country, but the gospel can go forth with the help of the Holy Spirit.

Outreach Ideas
Christian patronage of Jewish shops and restaurants over time may establish rapport in order to witness. Christian radio and television specifically contextualized for Persian Jews might be helpful.

Scripture Focus
"They read from the book, from the Law of God, clearly, and they gave the sense, so that the people understood the reading."  Nehemiah 8:8

Scripture Prayer
Pray for this people group to understand God’s word when they hear it.

Prayer Focus
Pray that the Iranian church would be strengthened in its faith and outreach. Pray for them to reach out to Jews. Pray for a people movement to Christ among Iranian Jews. Pray for increased openness to the things of Christ, especially among Jewish leaders.
