Barwala (Hindu traditions) in India
bar-VAH-lah

The Barwala claim to be the original inhabitants of the Jammu Valley, claiming descent from a Hindu ruler who is said to have settled his numerous sons throughout Jammu and Kashmir. The traditional occupation of the Barwala has been that of village watchmen, but many are now engaged in other occupations. Most of them live in rural areas. Traditionally they have worked as village watchmen and messengers, overseeing the work of coolies, bearing torches and carrying palanquins at weddings. Today, most of them are engaged in agriculture or as unskilled laborers. The Barwalas live mainly in nuclear households. The oldest son becomes the head of the household upon the father's death. They allow for divorce and remarriage.

Ministry Obstacles
Jammu and Kashmir continues to experience much strife between Muslims and Hindus. Christian ministry is difficult in this environment.

Scripture Focus
"For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people."  Jeremiah 31:33

Scripture Prayer
Pray for today’s people group to become the Lord’s people!

Prayer Focus
Please pray for educational and employment opportunities to be made available. Pray for them to have the chance to respond to Christ's invitation to join his family and to have the spiritual hunger to do so. Pray for the Holy Spirit to reveal Christ to hundreds of Barwala this year. Pray for the Lord to give them an intense desire to come closer to the loving Savior.
