Midobi in Sudan

The Midobi are a completely Muslim people, devout in their practice of Islam. The men observe all of the main Muslim festivals. The women, however, have had less contact with outside influences; consequently, they still carry out some traditional pre-Islamic practices such as fertility rites and divination (contact with the spirit world). Many Midobis are semi-nomadic shepherds who rely on livestock for their livelihood. They primarily raise sheep and goats, but also keep a few donkeys, camels, and cattle. Some Midobis are more settled and are farmers. The Midob language can be traced to the language of the Nubians, a people from Eastern Sudan. The Midobis are primarily concentrated in the Midob Hills of western Sudan. A large number of Midobis also live in the town of Malha.

Ministry Obstacles
Sudan is hostile to overt Christian missionary endeavors. There is also political violence, a situation that hinders the spread of ideas.

Scripture Focus
"You turn things upside down! Shall the potter be regarded as the clay, that the thing made should say of its maker, He did not make me; or the thing formed say of him who formed it, He has no understanding?"  Isaiah 29:16

Scripture Prayer
Pray that many from this people group will soon understand that they belong to God by right of His life-giving creation.

Prayer Focus
Pray for Midobi family leaders to have dreams of the loving and powerful Christ, opening them to his ways. Ask the Lord of the harvest to send caring and dedicated laborers to the Midobi. Pray that God will give the people a hunger to know Jesus and a desire to disciple others in his ways. Pray that Christian radio broadcasts will blanket Western Sudan and reach the Midobi with the gospel message.
