Lampung Sungkai in Indonesia
Coffee and strong family ties form part of the Lampung Sungkai ethnic identity. Coffee production is a common home-based industry for families. Even though they are small in population, the Sungkai avoid intermarrying and becoming part of one of the larger people groups around them, such as the Abung. Sungkai clans resolve issues amongst themselves through a system of consensus. At present, the Sungkai desire to form their own regency because they are a distinct group and should have their own regency, similar to the Way Kanan in Way Kanan Regency and the Abung in North Lampung Regency. Farming is the typical work of the Sungkai who live in villages.
Ministry Obstacles
Their ethnic identity is tied to Islam. Few are willing to look to the cross for spiritual answers. Even fewer are willing to listen to those who tell them the cross is the only way to God the Father.
