Dom (Muslim traditions) in India

The Dom are considered one of the original tribes of India, also known as the aboriginals. Their name varies somewhat according to where they live. In years past, they typically used the word Dom as their surname, but this has changed. Digging graves, cremating dead bodies, and making bamboo baskets have been traditional occupations, but they are now involved in various other occupations. They are often engaged in scavenging. They are a low-status community. Their children usually do not advance beyond the primary grades, and literacy rates are quite low. They accept food and water from several neighboring communities, but hardly any other community reciprocates in the same manner. Low-status people are often the very ones most responsive to the good news about Jesus Christ. They need workers to share the gospel of Jesus.

Ministry Obstacles
Doms may have minimal knowledge about Jesus (whom Muslims call Isa al-Masih), but at best will consider him to be only an honored prophet of God. We need to pray that the Lord will open their eyes to see and believe that he is the only way to God.

Pray that today’s people group will soon allow Jesus Christ, the son of David, to be their banner of salvation.

Prayer Focus
Pray that the Muslim Dom community would enjoy abundant life by putting their trust in Jesus Christ. Pray for the Lord to intervene in their families, calling people to his side and blessing them in every way. Pray for loving workers. Pray for their hearts to be drawn to the Lord of lords.
