Megh (Hindu traditions) in India
meeg
The Meghwals were originally Mahars from Maharashtra (meaning the land of the Mahars) and are a very low-status group. To escape their low status, they migrated and changed their name 26 times. Many of the Meghwals live on both sides of the Pakistan-India border. Around 1900, three major famines occurred, and many Meghwal traveled across the Thar Desert toward the Indus River to escape the famine.
Ministry Obstacles Many Hindus consider it a threat to their community to look elsewhere for spiritual answers.
Scripture Focus "Therefore, behold, I will make them know, this once I will make them know my power and my might, and they shall know that my name is the LORD." Jeremiah 16:21
Scripture Prayer Pray that today’s people group will understand from the heart that God is all powerful, and He can give or withhold blessings.
Prayer Focus Pray for the Hindu Meghwal population to have spiritual discernment and the courage to look to the cross.
Pray for them to have easy access to gospel materials.
Pray also for an improvement in living conditions among this low caste community, for educational opportunities for the children, and for employment opportunities to increase to benefit the adults. As the Hindu Meghwal community rely on God, may their community transform surrounding people groups as guided by the Holy Spirit.
