Abkhaz in Türkiye (Turkey)
AHB-kahz
The Abkhaz inhabit the disputed region of Abkhazia, which is located on the Black Sea Coast. Even though it is considered a part of Georgia, it is not governed by Georgia. The Russian invasion of the region from the 1810s to the 1860s resulted in a mass expulsion of the Muslims from Abkhaz to the Ottoman Empire. Hence, the people of Abkhaz belong to both Orthodox Christianity (dominant in Abkhazia) and Sunni Islam (dominant in Turkey). The Abkhaz who moved to Turkey adapted the culture of Turkey and many of them speak Turkish rather their own native language. The Abkhaz language uses the Cyrillic script for writing.
Ministry Obstacles Overt Christian witnessing in Turkey is often dangerous and highly discouraged.
Scripture Focus "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead," 1 Peter 1:3
Scripture Prayer Pray that many among this people are born again and become part of God’s family.
Prayer Focus Pray for the Abkhaz Christians in Turkey, that they would be biblically strong followers of Christ and for them to be able to stand firm in their trials. Pray for the peaceful resolution of the dispute concerning Abkhazia, so that the governments of Georgia, Russia and Abkhazia would be able to work out their differences amicably. Pray for the believers to be discerning in sharing the gospel and pray that the Lord would work mightily through them.
