Manga Kanuri in Nigeria
MAHNG-ah kah-NOO-ree
The Kanuri tribes include the Yerwa Kanuri, the Manga Kanuri and several other sub-tribes. The majority of the Kanuri live in the Borno Province of northeastern Nigeria, where they are the dominant people group.
Ministry Obstacles The Kanuri have been Muslims since the eleventh century. Though they blend their form of Islam with their ancient beliefs, Islam is their identity. It will be difficult to present Christ to them in such a way that they won't see it as a threat to their identity.
Scripture Focus "But when Jesus saw it, he was indignant and said to them, Let the children come to me; do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it." Mark 10:14-15
Scripture Prayer Pray that this people group humbles themselves and comes to God with child-like trust and thereby enter into His kingdom.
Prayer Focus Ask God to call people who are willing to go to the Kanuri.
Pray that God would use the small number of Kanuri believers to share the gospel with their friends and families.
Ask the Holy Spirit to soften the hearts of the Kanuri towards the gospel.
Ask God to raise up prayer teams who will begin breaking up the soil through intercession.
Ask the Lord to raise up a movement of Manga Kanuri disciples making more disciples.
Throughout Africa, people love music and dance. If the gospel message is presented musically, the Manga Kanuri might find it acceptable. Pray for God to raise up the right people to present the gospel in a culturally acceptable way.
