Muna in Indonesia

The Muna in Indonesia, who reside near the sea, have been successful in pearl farming and seaweed cultivation. They usually live in the interior of Muna Island, although there are several coastal communities. They live together in kinship groups, which are called Tombu. In general, these communities are well-connected by roads. The custom of pokadulu (mutual assistance) influences various activities in the Muna community, as groups of people will gather to do large projects such as clearing, planting, and harvesting fields. In marriage, the groom pays for the bride, with the groom's social status determining the price. Before the marriage, the prospective groom is in a trial period with the prospective bride's family. Due to these traditions, many young people choose to elope.

Ministry Obstacles
The majority of Muna follow Sunni Islam. Two villages are historically Catholic, and traditional animistic beliefs still influence many aspects of Muna life. There was a Protestant village, but its residents have moved to Ambon, resulting in a diminished gospel witness.

Scripture Focus
"And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions."  Joel 2:28

Scripture Prayer
Pray that this people group receives the gift of the Holy Spirit as they turn to the Lord.

Prayer Focus
Pray for the Lord to send laborers to the Muna who would share with them the good news of Jesus Christ. Pray that the Muna would trust in Christ and not continue to practice elements of false religions. Pray that new believers would be eager and faithful to share the gospel with others.
