Hajam in Pakistan
hah-ZHAM
The Hajam, also known as Nai Muslims, have long been recognized as barbers and manicurists. Found throughout India, much of Pakistan, and Nepal's Terai region, they remain a respected caste whose work is closely tied to community life. Many own barber shops or salons, while others serve at family events, trimming hair for weddings and funerals. Some Hajam also carry out circumcisions, act as matchmakers, or assist in childbirth. This makes them important in both social and religious traditions. While most are Sunni Muslims, Hajam women often wear a nose stud and even the Hindu-style bindi, reflecting cultural overlap with their neighbors.
Ministry Obstacles There are very few known followers of Christ among the Hajam. Reaching them will likely depend on outsiders who can bring the gospel in ways that connect with their daily lives and traditions.
Scripture Focus "Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of your name; deliver us, and atone for our sins, for your name’s sake!" Psalm 79:9
Scripture Prayer Pray that many from this people group will call out to the Lord as desperately as the psalmist did in this verse.
Prayer Focus Pray for God to awaken a deep spiritual hunger among the Hajam that leads them to seek and find Christ.
Ask the Lord to send loving workers who will share the gospel with humility and compassion.
Pray for a movement to Christ that spreads within the Hajam community, bringing hope and transformation to families.
