Tamazight Berber in Morocco
TAH-mah-zeet BUR-bur

Berbers are divided into subgroups based on language or region. They prefer to be called Imazighen, meaning "free men," reflecting their value of freedom and independence. Despite this, the term Berber remains widely used, often obscuring their preferred identity. Berbers primarily inhabit the High Atlas and Middle Atlas Mountains, a region known for its beauty and forests. All Berbers speak Tamazight. Historically, they were Christian before the spread of Islam, but today most are Sunni Muslims, although some continue to practice a blend of Islam and traditional beliefs, preserving elements of their ancestral culture.

Ministry Obstacles
With so few believers, Berbers need outsiders to bring the gospel. In a region that upholds their Islamic faith and traditions, the Berbers are a hard group to reach. We thank God for the few who are continuing in their faith among the strong Islamic groups.

Pray that this people group will understand that sin drains and destroys, but the Lord offers forgiveness and spiritual refreshment.

Prayer Focus
Pray for a spiritual hunger among Berbers that will lead them to the cross and the empty grave. Pray for Berbers to put their faith and hope in Christ, paving the way for disciples to make more disciples. Pray for loving workers to go to leaders and find persons of peace who will welcome them into their communities with the gospel. Pray that Christ would strengthen the few believers to spread the gospel where they can. Pray that the Christians would be known by their good fruits and as light in the darkness.
