Dirang Monpa in India
The Dirang Monpa are a people who live in one primary region in northeastern India known as the Dirang Circle. So Dirang refers to the region where they live, and Monpa is the name attributed to the people. One interesting fact: the National Yak Research Center is located there, and that ties into the diet of the Monpa culture. Their diets consist of various cereals, vegetables, fish, fruits, and meats… including yak. The Dirang Monpa rely on lamas, which are Tibetan Buddhist spiritual guides, to help direct key life paths. A lama determines the time and date of a wedding through horoscopes. In marriage ceremonies, the lama blesses the couple, and they are married. The following community feast results in drunkenness on rice whisky; even children get drunk. Lamas help name children following birth through horoscopes.
Ministry Obstacles The Dirang Monpas have few, if any, chance to hear of a different way to live because they live in a mountainous region where outsiders rarely go.
