Magahia Kumhar in India
mah-gah-EE-ah KOO-mar
The Magahia live in Odisha, and they own and cultivate land. Part of the greater Kumhar group who are traditionally potters, the Magahia are well educated, and some work in business. A caste council looks after their needs. They eat meat, fish, eggs and rice. The Magahia are monogamous and marriages are arranged by discussion and mutual consent. They do not allow for divorce but widows and widowers can marry again. After the death of the father, the sons inherit the property. The Magahia practice Hinduism, the ancient religion of India. They visit Hindu temples and offer prayers, food, flowers and incense to their gods hoping to gain protection and benefits. The Magahia Kumhar speak several languages, each of which has gospel materials.
Ministry Obstacles With only about one in a thousand Magahia following Christ, they will need to hear the gospel from outsiders.
Scripture Focus "And he asked them, But who do you say that I am? Peter answered him, You are the Christ." Mark 8:29
Scripture Prayer Pray that this people would believe and proclaim, like Peter, that Jesus Christ is their Savior and Lord.
Prayer Focus Pray that the council leaders come to Jesus Christ and lead their community into a movement to Christ.
