Kolhati in India

The Kolhatis of western India are a nomadic people with a remarkable past. Known for their daring hunts of destructive wild boars armed with only spears and dogs, they were once celebrated for their courage and skill. Farmers relied on them not only to protect crops but also to provide the village with feasts after a successful hunt. Beyond hunting, their artistry shone as traveling entertainers—singing, dancing, playing music, performing dramas, and dazzling crowds with acrobatics during Hindu festivals and family celebrations. Kolhati women often added fortune-telling to the mix, weaving their traditions deep into village life. Though historically stigmatized under British colonial rule as "vagrants" and "criminals," the Kolhati's resilience and creativity have kept their cultural identity alive.

Ministry Obstacles
Kolhatis seek divine favor through temple rituals, offering food, flowers, and incense to their gods. Their devotion is centered on transactions for protection and prosperity rather than on a personal, relational bond with God. Because of this worldview, the gospel's message of an intimate relationship with the living God can feel foreign and difficult to grasp. Deep-seated social marginalization may further hinder openness to new beliefs.

Ask the Lord to raise up Spirit-filled Kolhati believers who can share the gospel with courage and compassion. Pray for a multiplying movement of disciples who will bring healing, unity, and lasting hope, transforming entire villages through the power of Christ.
