Khvarshi in Russia
kuh-VAR-sheen
The Khvarshin people living in the southwest mountains of Dagestan in Russia have lived a hard life for decades. From 1944-1957, the Soviets forcibly relocated them out of their mountain homeland and into the lowlands of Chechnya. In the years following, they were allowed to return, but those who did found their villages in ruins. Though some houses have been rebuilt, many ruins still remain – a testament to the hardships they have endured. The Khvarshin are considered to be Sunni Muslims since they adopted Islam centuries ago though in practice, they maintain the traditions of animism and shamanism.
Ministry Obstacles The Khvarshin have their own unique language but it is not widely known. In addition, mountain villages may not be easy to reach.
Scripture Focus "And a vision appeared to Paul in the night: a man of Macedonia was standing there, urging him and saying, Come over to Macedonia and help us." Acts 16:9
Scripture Prayer Pray that the Lord sends messengers to this people group to tell them the good news about Jesus.
Prayer Focus In the spring of 2017, heaven rejoiced as the very first member of the Kvarshin entered the kingdom of God. Pray that through the transformation of one, the Khvarshin people would come to know the God of heaven, who sees them, knows them and calls them home. Pray that the Khvarshin would find peace, refreshment and even economic recovery from the God whose name is Jehovah Jireh, the provider.
Pray for a movement to Christ among the Khvarshin people this decade.
