Kedah Malay in Thailand

Kedah Malay speakers were among the first Malays to live in this part of the world. Historically, they had good relations with Arab traders. There were many interracial marriages between Arabs and Kedah Malay. For that reason, the Kedah Malay dialect has a lot of Arabic words. Kedah Malay speakers live in a cultural ecotone where Buddhist Thai cultures and Muslim Malay cultures merge.

Ministry Obstacles
Places where major religions intersect are often where people define their identity through their religion. People do this to protect their identity. Many will find the idea of salvation in Christ to be a threat to their people.

Scripture Focus
"For so the Lord has commanded us, saying, I have made you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth."  Acts 13:47

Scripture Prayer
Pray that the believers in today’s people group become God’s light to their own group and to the nations of the world.

Prayer Focus
Pray for the Kedah Malays to have the courage to identify themselves with Jesus Christ. Pray for the Lord to send dreams and visions to Keday Malay leaders, which will lead their people to seek and find Jesus Christ. Pray for spiritual openness among the Kedah Malay. Pray for a triumphant Kedah Malay church defined by the gospel of salvation, discipleship, and obedience to the Lord Jesus Christ.
