Chaungtha in Myanmar (Burma)

Chaungtha means "people of the valley." Chaungtha are historically and ethno-linguistically related to the Burmese. Consequently, their identity has been eroded as an increasing number of Chaungtha choose to identify as Burmese. They hope to benefit from alignment with the majority ruling people in Myanmar. Central areas of Myanmar are staunchly Buddhist. Generally speaking, the mountainous perimeter of Myanmar is occupied by tribal groups who practice Animism. The heart of the nation, where the Chaungtha live, is overwhelmingly Buddhist.

Ministry Obstacles
Most Chaungtha are Buddhist, however, maintaining their traditional ethnic belief in evil spirits, or nats. The worldview and value system of Buddhism differ significantly from those of the Bible, although there are some similarities. Accepting the Biblical view is difficult for the Buddhist steeped in his belief system from birth.

Scripture Focus
"Nebuchadnezzar answered and said, Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who has sent his angel and delivered his servants, who trusted in him, and set aside the king’s command, and yielded up their bodies rather than serve and worship any god except their own God."  Daniel 3:28

Scripture Prayer
Pray that leaders of this people group will be as amazed at the works of God as this Babylonian king. Pray that they will worship God alone.

Prayer Focus
Pray for Chaungtha to hear the good news about Christ, who, alone, can free them from evil spirits and forgive their sins. Pray they will understand that God of the Bible has power over all created beings. Pray for dedicated, committed intercessors for sustained prayer. Ask the Lord to send workers to disciple them and teach them to disciple others. Pray that Christian resources would become available in Rakhine, the heart language of most Chaungtha. Pray that the Lord would raise up a growing church movement.
