Pong in Laos
The Pong live in extended families. When two young Pong get married, they move in with the bride's family. They remain there until they have children. If they fail to produce a son, however, they must permanently live with the bride's family. The Pong are also very superstitious. When a Pong dies, a boy from the family of the deceased throws three stones on the ancestral altar. They believe this represents the anger the spirit of the house feels when it loses one of the residents. The body is then left in the house for up to a week before being covered in fragrant leaves, put into a coffin, and buried.
Ministry Obstacles There are almost no Christians among the Pong of Laos. All Pong are animists. Few have ever heard of Jesus Christ. Their remote geographical location and small, close-knit communities have ensured their isolation from Christianity.
