Pasi (Hindu traditions) in India
PAH-see

The Pasi have a hero's legend, yet a life of low status. The legend of the origin of the Pasi begins with a man who wished to kill some cows, sacred animals. The Hindu sage, Parashuram, was practicing spiritual discipline in the jungle when he heard the cries of the sacred cows. He rushed to help, but the cow killer was aided by his friends. So Parashuram made five men out of kusha grass and brought them to life with drops of his perspiration. The name Pasi is from the Hindi pasina (sweat). Despite this noble legend, the Pasi have "untouchable" status in South Asia, especially among other Hindus. They produce toddy, an alcoholic beverage in demand despite the fact that its use is frowned upon by both Hindus and Muslims.
