Tengger in Indonesia

The Tengger live in the cool, mountainous region of Mount Bromo, believed to be a holy mountain. The fertile soil of their East Java homeland is ideal for planting vegetables, and the majority of Tengger work as farmers. The beauty of their region attracts tourists to witness sunrises over the panoramic view from Mount Bromo, as well as experience life and traditional customs in the Tengger region. Many Tengger work in the tourism industry. The Tengger warmly welcome visitors. To outsiders, the Tengger seem simple, and most only have a junior high school education. The Tengger who are more well-off can send their children to the city for studies. Hinduism in Bali and that of the Tengger, known as Hindu Dharma, share similarities, but the Tengger variety is without a caste system. For the Tengger, Mount Bromo (Brahma) is central to the yearly ritual, Kasada, held in the temple at the foot of the mountain crater. Followers bring offerings to throw into the smoking crater.

Ministry Obstacles
Their dedication to the Hindu religion and the fact that their rituals encourage a prosperous tourist industry add barriers to the gospel.
