Mekongga Tolaki in Indonesia

In the 10th century, there were two main kingdoms on mainland southeastern Sulawesi island, Indonesia, where the Mekongga Tolaki live. There are a couple of Tolaki tribes, one of which is the Mekongga. They live in southeastern Sulawesi, an island with four large peninsulas in the Mekonga Mountains near Soroako. Their language, which they call Mekonggka, is a dialect of Tolaki. Tolaki tribes like the Mekongga hold to several community values. The Mekongga Tolaki have put their faith in a combination of the spirit world and Allah. There is a small Christian community among the Mekongga Tolaki that has the potential to spread faith in Jesus Christ alone.

Ministry Obstacles
The Mekongga Tolaki have a culture of obedience and loyalty. They have a shame-based culture where there is an understanding of what social manners they are expected to adhere to. They value and enforce group unity, and their dignity is based on being part of their group. This will make people think twice before giving their allegiance to Jesus Christ.

Scripture Focus
"Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world."  1 John 4:4

Scripture Prayer
Pray that the believers in this people group would understand that God’s Spirit who lives in them is far greater than any spirit in the world.

Prayer Focus
Pray for a spiritual hunger that will drive the Mekongga Tolaki into the loving arms of Jesus Christ, no matter what the cost. Pray for the Lord to thrust out Holy Spirit-anointed workers to the Mekongga Tolaki. Pray for the Lord to establish his church among the Mekongga Tolaki this decade. Pray they see that Jesus took their shame on the cross, and that is the only way to salvation.
