Jakun, Djakun in Malaysia
Jakuns are believed to have lived in Peninsular Malaysia for 7,000 years and are one of the Orang Asli ("original people") groups. They traditionally hunt game with blowpipes and poison-tipped darts and gather fruit and forest products for barter. Some are farmers. Jakun have intermarried with Malays, Chinese, Senoi, and Semang, and tribal boundaries have become blurred. The Jakun bomoh or witchdoctor is both feared and respected in their society. He deals with the spirits in each Jakun village and is more influential than the village chief. If questioned on their religious beliefs, some Jakun who have considerable contact with the Malay would say that their god is Allah.
Ministry Obstacles Many Jakun communities are in a state of transition. They have largely given up hunting and foraging for food to rely on agriculture for survival. Some will need educational and agricultural assistance during this transition period. There are few, if any, Christians who are helping them make this essential transition.
Scripture Focus "Go therefore to the main roads and invite to the wedding feast as many as you find.’ And those servants went out into the roads and gathered all whom they found, both bad and good. So the wedding hall was filled with guests." Matthew 22:9-10
Scripture Prayer Pray that many in today’s people group to accept the Lord’s invitation to become part of His kingdom and join His great feast at the end of the age.
Prayer Focus Please pray for community workers to aid them in this process.
Pray for the Jakun culture to be renewed and enhanced by a work of the Holy Spirit and shaped into a God-centered and God-honoring mold.
Pray for the Holy Spirit to move among Jakun family and community leaders to seek His face and enjoy his blessings.
Pray that soon the Jakun will have faith that will lead them to live honorable lives that will draw others to the Savior.
