According to records, they were made outcastes by India's Sen Dynasty in the 11th and 12th centuries along with other uprooted Bengali Hindu communities. They fled to southern swamps until the British arrived.
The bulk of this people group lives either in India's state of West Bengal, or Bangladesh, but there are smaller pockets of them in Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Bhutan.
Most of them are farmers, fishermen, boatmen, or carpenters. Others work as wage laborers. Long considered untouchables, this caste has remained socially immobile for years. Many still live below the poverty line in desperate need of gainful employment, economic restoration, and socio-political acceptance.
Their faith is in Hindu gods and idols rather than the living Savior and Creator. The Namasudras practice folk Hinduism, venerating their ancestors and family gods.
Believers can help the Namasudra people with practical economic needs like helping them to build their own co-ops to sell their products.
* Pray for the Holy Spirit to give the Namasudra people in Sri Lanka teachable and understanding hearts.
* Pray that a strong movement of the Holy Spirit will bring entire Namasudra families into a rich experience of God's blessing.
* Pray for Namasudra families to be drawn by the Holy Spirit to seek forgiveness and to understand the adequacy of Christ's work on the cross.
* Pray for teams of believers to do sustained, focused prayer for the Lord to open the hearts of Namasudra family leaders to experience God's blessing through a movement of family-based discovery Bible studies.
