Introduction / History

Ingessana (Gaahmg) are the members of an African ethnic group of Sudan who
speak the Gaam language. They have historically protected themselves and their hill
country from many invasions. Their culture is resistant to change, more so than other
ethnic groups of the Southern Blue Nile region.

They are self-sustaining in what they cultivate in the hill area, the Gaam are slow to
grow cash crops or to migrate for wages. As a result of past conflict with Arabs and other invaders, they have a reputation of hostility toward strangers and even refugees.

Where Are they Located?

Gaam Ingessana people live around the Tabi Hills, southwest of Damazine and northwest of Kurmuk in the Blue Nile Province of South Sudan.

What Are Their Lives Like?

There are four sub groups of the Gaam Ingessana people, and each sub group is defined by their line of work. One herds livestock, another farms, another blacksmiths, and the fourth consists of weavers. The Ingessana are also famous for their throwing knives.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The traditional religion of the Gaam Ingessana people of South Sudan is based on worship of the sun. Some are Muslims.

What Are Their Needs?

Because they are self-protective and resistant to change, any efforts by disciples to bring the gospel to them will be met with much resistance. Only the Holy Spirit can cross these boundaries.

They also need to be educated regarding better ways to maintain their quality of life. It will be difficult for them to learn new life skills.

They need Scriptural resources in their heart language. So far, nothing exists for them.
