Introduction / History

South Asians have been living in Hong Kong for some time, even since the days of the British Empire and many have descended from those days. Many in modern times have become Chinese nationals.

There have been problems of nationality of some South Asian citizens here when under British rule and under Chinese rule too. Maybe an opportunity to give the gospel message to those searching for an identity here.

What are Their Lives Like?

The South Asians in Hong Kong speak different languages and many speak more than one language such as English, Hindi and Urdu. Some can speak Cantonese but many cannot.

Hinduism is the religion with the largest following in Hong Kong among South Asians. Besides Indian Hindus, there are Hindus from other South Asian countries too.

Muslims from Pakistan and India used to work as army and police officers in Hong Kong. There are Muslims descended from a mixed South Asian and Chinese background as some had Chinese wives and their children became Muslims.

The Sikhs in Hong Kong come from the Punjab. Many are doctors, lawyers and some are financiers also.

The Sindhi in Hong Kong come from Sindh in Pakistan. They are wealthy and many are export and import traders.

The Nepalis in Hong Kong are mostly sons and daughters of former Ghurka soldiers. Many work as security guards.

Other South Asians in Hong Kong are for example the Jains among whom many do diamond trading, the Tamils and the Parsees.

Prayer Points

* Pray that God gives even more South Asians dreams and visions leading them to Jesus Christ.
* Pray that gospel recordings and Christian literature will bring the South Asians in Hong Kong to Salvation too.
