Introduction / History

In the sixteenth century, Tunisians called for help from Turkish soldiers to stop the Spanish from ruling them. The Ottomans then took control and the Tunisians became part of the Ottoman Empire. Tunisia then became a mixture of Tunisians, Turks and other people. The Ottoman Turks introduced Sunni Islam to Tunisia.

Today the Turks live near the Tunisian coast in the capital Tunis and Mahadia while some live in other parts of Tunisia. There are Turkish mosques in the country.

The Turks in Tunisia were previously privileged. By the nineteenth century they married locals and some were in good positions in their lives. Many worked in commerce and crafts. There have been merchants descended from Turks here. There are many notable Tunisians of Turkish descent.

The Turks in Tunisia speak in Turkish, Arabic and French.
