Introduction / History The Kvandin (Bagulal) are a small ethnic group belonging to the Ando-Tsezian peoples of West Alpine Dagestan. They may also be known as Bagvalal. They call themselves, "Bogatiyri - heros." Culturally and linguistically they are close to the Avars. In their everyday life they have merged with Avars to whom they are often attributed. However, their households are characterized by their own language and some characteristic cultural features. The persistence of the enduring identities of this people and other ethnic groups has been aided by the rugged terrain and by societies whose loyalties are to clan and family as much as to nation or region.
These people live on the Western slopes of the high mountains of Dagestan. Close to the Georgian border, they are almost at the midway point on a line from Tblisi to Makhachkala.
What are their beliefs? The Bagulal people are Sunni Moslems.
