The Ormuri are a small and historically significant people group living primarily in eastern Afghanistan, especially around the city of Baraki Barak in Logar Province. Smaller related communities have also historically been connected to areas across the border in Pakistan. They are known for speaking Ormuri, an endangered Eastern Iranian language distinct from the surrounding Pashto and Dari languages. Over time, many Ormuri people have shifted toward speaking Pashto or Dari in everyday life, placing pressure on the survival of their traditional language.
Historically, the Ormuri are believed to be among the older settled populations of the region before the expansion of larger Pashtun tribal groups. Their long presence in eastern Afghanistan has exposed them to centuries of political upheaval, tribal conflict, Islamic influence, and cultural assimilation. Because they are relatively small in number and surrounded by larger ethnic populations, much of their distinct identity has gradually weakened, though family heritage and local traditions still remain important.
Many Ormuri families live in agricultural communities where farming, livestock care, trade, labor, and small business activity help support daily life. Wheat, fruits, vegetables, and livestock products are common elements of the local economy. In more urbanized settings, some work in government service, transportation, retail, or skilled trades.
Family and community ties remain central within Ormuri society. Respect for elders, hospitality, and loyalty to family are highly valued cultural traits. Weddings, religious gatherings, and seasonal celebrations help preserve social identity and community cohesion. Traditional oral storytelling and local customs have historically played an important role in passing cultural memory from one generation to another.
Life in Afghanistan has been deeply affected by decades of war, political instability, poverty, and insecurity. Many Ormuri communities face challenges related to employment, healthcare access, education, and economic uncertainty. Younger generations often experience pressure to migrate or assimilate into larger surrounding cultures, which further threatens the preservation of their language and identity.
The Ormuri are Muslim, and Islamic belief and practice strongly shape daily life, family expectations, and community values. Religious observances commonly include prayer, mosque attendance, fasting during Ramadan, and participation in Islamic festivals. In many communities, religious identity is deeply intertwined with cultural belonging and social acceptance.
Alongside formal Islamic practice, folk traditions and local spiritual beliefs may also influence everyday life. Practices involving charms, blessings, fear of spiritual forces, or reliance on traditional spiritual remedies can remain present in some communities. These influences may reinforce spiritual fear and obscure the biblical message of salvation by grace through Jesus Christ alone.
Most Ormuri have had little meaningful exposure to biblical Christianity. Those who come to faith in Christ may face serious social pressure, rejection, or danger from family and community members. Believers need careful discipleship, trusted fellowship, and strong grounding in Scripture to remain faithful under difficult circumstances.
The Ormuri need greater access to the gospel through faithful Christian witness, Scripture, and long-term discipleship rooted firmly in the Word of God. Because they are a small and often overlooked people group, many may never have personally encountered a follower of Jesus Christ or heard a clear presentation of the gospel.
Practical needs are also significant. Many communities face economic hardship, educational limitations, poor infrastructure, healthcare shortages, and ongoing instability connected to conflict in Afghanistan. Language preservation is another challenge as younger generations increasingly adopt dominant regional languages.
Believers from Ormuri backgrounds need spiritually mature leadership, biblical teaching, and safe fellowship with other Christians. Christian workers serving among Afghan peoples need wisdom, humility, courage, and perseverance as they seek to demonstrate Christ's love in culturally conservative and often dangerous environments.
Pray that the Ormuri people would hear the gospel clearly and come to know Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.
Pray that God would strengthen believers from Muslim backgrounds in Afghanistan and help them remain faithful to biblical truth under pressure.
Pray that the Ormuri would be adopted through the People Group Adoption program so that sustained prayer, discipleship, and future gospel engagement would continue among them.
Pray for improved access to education, healthcare, stability, and economic opportunity among Ormuri communities, and that Christian workers would serve with wisdom, humility, and compassion.
