Jordanians are among the Levant Arabs who originally settled all over the Arabian Peninsula and later migrated to North Africa. Today, several hundred thousand Levant Arabs live along the northern edges of the Arabian Desert. They are spread from Israel to Kuwait and as far east as Iran. "Levant" is a broad term that includes several groups of Arabs: the Jordanian, Palestinian, Iraqi, Chaldean, and Syrian Arabs. These groups share a common language but their history and cultures are different from one another.
The United States has hosted people from each of these groups including the Jordanians. Jordanians are likely to be found in New York City, Washington DC and Chicago.
Many Jordanian Arabs came to the U. S. as refugees following the 1967 war with Israel. A civil war in the 1970s drove more of them to U. S. shores. These were the biggest, but not the only times Jordanian Arabs have had to flee. The older ones are in their third generation now; they are well-established in the U. S. Their children and grandchildren are well-adapted to American ways. A fairly high percentage of Jordanian Arabs hold college degrees. These people are often professors, scientists, doctors, engineers, and entrepreneurs. Though they often interact with other Arab peoples, Jordanians have their own organizations including the Jordanian American Association of New York.
Like members of religious groups all over the world, Jordanian Muslims equate “Christianity” with a worldwide political system.
Over 90 percent of the Jordanian Arabs in the U. S. are Muslim, but there are also Orthodox Christians, Roman Catholics and Evangelicals among them as well.
Their main need is spiritual hunger. At this point few Jordanians in the U. S are suffering from physical needs, and like the rest of the American population, spiritual complacency sets in.
Pray that Jordanian Arabs will have a hunger for spiritual truth that will lead them to the only Savior, Jesus Christ. Ask God to give Jordanian Arab believers opportunities to share the love of Christ with their own people in the United States. Pray for the Lord to thrust out loving believers to reach Jordanian Muslims for Christ.
